What is Cogmed?

Please review this list of frequently asked questions to learn more about the Cogmed training program. The selected information is provided from the Cogmed website. Please visit the website or click on the links for more information. (You will be directed to a new window / tab separate from PPS.)

What is Cogmed Working Memory Training?
Cogmed Working Memory Training is an evidence-based, computerized training program designed by leading neuroscientists to improve attention by effectively increasing working memory capacity over a 5 week training period. Cogmed users range from young children to senior adults. Some have diagnosed attention deficits, some have suffered a brain injury, and others find they’re not doing as well as they could, academically or professionally, given their intelligence and their efforts.

Where does the training take place?
Cogmed training is web-based, so training can be done in the privacy of your home. The on-line program is compatible on any computer that supports flash.

How do I know this will help my child?
With careful selection, screening (sample working memory checklist), clinical assessment, and support, Cogmed success is quite high. In fact,
in both research and clinical practice, 80% of users achieve measurable improvements and benefits in working memory. This is quite remarkable. But please bear in mind, no intervention works for everyone, and we cannot provide guarantees in any particular case. Feel free to contact PPS to determine if Cogmed is right for you and your child.

Do the results last?
Yes. Research and clinical experience show that the effects of Cogmed Training last after training. The reason is that once working memory capacity increases, you naturally continue to use it at its new level, which serves as constant maintenance training.

Is Cogmed training a substitute for medication?
No, not necessarily. For example, in the case of individuals on ADD/ADHD medication, Cogmed training is a complementary intervention. Stimulant medication and Cogmed training impact the brain in different ways. Medications will have effects that Cogmed training does not, particularly regarding hyperactivity. And Cogmed training
in many cases will have effects that cannot be achieved by medication only. Feel free to contact PPS to determine if Cogmed is right for you and your child.

How is Cogmed different from other types of “brain training?”
Cogmed is different in how it works from “brain training programs” in three ways:

∙ Cogmed is backed by solid research in both neuroscience and clinical practice.

∙ Cogmed training is provided exclusively by a network of carefully trained and
       qualified professionals.

PPS is a Cogmed Qualified Practice committed to ensuring that you receive the
Coaching needed for the best possible results.

∙ An established track record of strong and lasting effects that has made a real
       difference in people's lives
in thousands of users across America and around the
       world.

Results are what really matter.

About Working Memory
Working memory.
The search engine of the Mind.
Working memory is the cognitive function responsible for keeping information online, manipulating it, and using it in your thinking. It is the way that you delegate the information that you encounter to the parts of your brain that can take action. In this way, working memory is necessary for staying focused on a task, blocking out distractions, and keeping you updated about what is going on around you.

We use our working memory constantly in daily life helping us to perform efficiently and effectively in academic, professional, and social settings.
Working memory.
The engine of Learning.
A strong working memory is essential for learning. As such, poor working memory may lead to significant impairment for students. This is why working memory capacity is a very good predictor for academic success, and why working memory capacity is strongly connencted with students’ performance, particularly in reading and math.
